I always knew there was “something more” out there…

Something I was supposed to do, or someone I was supposed to be. It was a deeply-felt knowing; an unscratchable itch that prickled beneath the surface of everything.

For the longest time I thought my something more was being a writer, but when writing became both my business and hobby, doing OK in both camps, I was surprised to find the itch was still there. If anything it had grown more insistent.

Did my ‘something more’ ever turn up?

Happily, it did.

It took a big birthday, coupled with the tragedy of someone dying under the wheels of a train I was travelling on, to finally shock me into doing the work of exploring what the hell I was supposed to do with my life.

If you’d told me back then that my path to something more would involve retraining as a psychotherapist, then becoming a mindset trainer, I’d have asked what you were smoking. Ironically, it turned out that MY something more is helping sensitive, purposeful humans get out of their own way so that they can pursue THEIR something more.

Using an unique blend of therapy, training, coaching and hypnosis, I show my clients how to overcome the limiting beliefs, emotions and habits that are stopping them from using their gifts to make a bigger impact.

How cool is that?

Finally, the gnawing itch has buggered off, replaced by the deep privilege of witnessing who people are capable of becoming when stuff like anxiety, low self worth and imposter syndrome take a hike.

This Substack is now part of that joy.

Why should you care?

Have you felt, it, the itch?

Has “I know I was born for something more than this” been a drum beat in your life, rising and falling in the background, sometimes quietened, but never fully silenced?

Are you tired of the restrictive stories you tell yourself about who you are and what you’re capable of?

If any of that rings a bell, you’re in the right place. In these posts you’ll find a stack of proven mindset tools, ideas and suggestions that might just help you think in a different way. If even one thing hits home, it could lead to clearer focus and bring your something more within reach.

Surely that’s worth a punt?

Our contribution to others finding their ‘more’

When you choose to become a paying subscriber, you’ll be supporting thousands of women who want to seek better opportunities for themselves, their families and their communities. Eight percent of every net payment goes to fund micro-finance, savings clubs and business training in communities where deep poverty and the low status of women have led to major social problems.

Working with local partners, the charity Five Talents has trained and supported hundreds of thousands of women, who’ve been able to set up small enterprises that support their families and communities. As business owners, they also gain status and have more influence in local matters. Find out more here.

A brief aside on the importance of knowing our values

As part of building the number one skill of self-awareness, I encourage you to dig into what’s truly important to you. Not the values you’ve grown up with, or those you’ve absorbed from peers, work, culture or politics, but those that really matter to you.

Why is this so important? Well, once we understand and embrace our values, they become our compass. If our career, relationships or way of life are in constant conflict with what matters most to us, how can we ever feel happy and fulfilled? How can we ever become our something more?

Here are my own top five values, together with what they represent for me. If a few of these vibe with you, I bet we’ll get on:

  • LOVE – accept myself and others; whole-heartedly enable, encourage and support the best in others and myself; contribute freely and be open to receive; embody thankfulness.

  • DARE – explore; lead; be the ‘master of my fate and captain of my soul’; be independent, bold and brave; imagine and create; find better ways; seek opportunities, learning and fun.

  • HONOUR – live with decency, integrity and authenticity; respect myself and others; be accountable; show my truth; keep my promises; accept the truth of others; live a life that matters.

  • CONNECT – communicate thoughtfully; embrace empathy, belonging and inclusion; listen and be heard; collaborate; be compassionately curious; foster community; seek concordance.

  • EVOLVE – become my ‘something more’; turn purpose into impact; welcome change; adapt; learn and keep growing; enable growth in others; create new stories.

Summary of my values: Live On Purpose

If you want to explore your values, and I recommend you do, The Barrett Values Centre is a good place to start. The assessment costs $20 but it’s worth it (half goes to charity and I’m not on commission!). You’ll also find loads of free resources if you search for “values assessment”.

Final stuff about me

I’m on a nomadic adventure as part of my something more, exploring the nooks and crannies of the UK and making new friends along the way. Scotland has my heart but the rest of the country fells me with its beauty too.

I’m also a writer of fiction and screenplays. My co-writer, Ross Cameron, and I are on a long, slow edit of our first novel, a thriller.
